Things you didn’t know about the Mercedes Benz AMG

From a humble beginning to becoming a world-famous icon in sports cars Mercedes AMG offers plenty of surprises. Half a century ago AMG became synonymous with the Mercedes Benz driving performance. AMG began its operations in a home-based business with only two employees! Today it has become an exclusive name in sports cars and a global sensation. Here are little known facts about the Mercedes Benz AMG.

The Name Did you know that AMG stands for the names of its founders? Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher started AMG. The ‘A’ and the ‘M’ represent their surnames while the ‘G’ stands for Großaspach, which is the hometown of Aufrecht in Germany.

Humble beginnings Today, you may have to go through a Japanese car auction system to get your hands on a Mercedes AMG but it all began in a small garage in a town in Germany. In 1967, the two founders who were former employees of Mercedes-Benz started their venture in a small garage. They started by transforming their cars into racecars.

The first AMG! The iconic ‘Red Pig’ was the first vehicle to place AMG in headlines. The Mercedes Benz 300 SEL four-door sedan was modified as a super speed sports car. The founders’ modified the car significantly and it produced 428 horsepower. They also managed to make the car much lighter, however; it was still the heaviest on the racetrack. In its debut race in 1971, the car won second place claiming AMG’s success in the motorsport circuit.

Mercedes – AMG The first vehicle to be jointly developed by Mercedes Benz and AMG was the C36 AMG. In 1998, when Daimler acquired a majority of stakes in AMG, the two companies merged to set the stage for several Mercedes Benz AMG high-performance vehicles.

AMG Black Series The unique AMG Black series offers some of the most exclusive cars of the brand. This series focused on exclusive models that optimized with top aerodynamics. There are only five models that have the distinct AMG Black series badge. These include the CLK 63 Black Series, C 63 Black Series, SL 65 Black Series, SLS Black Series, and the SLK 55 Black Series. There is an additional member to join the Black family anytime soon.

SLS AMG was a Bomb! The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG, which was introduced in 2010, came with magnificent gullwing doors. The interesting part about these doors is that it had tiny explosives installed on their hinges. This was done for an emergency, for when the car rolls over the explosives will unhinge the doors automatically allowing the passengers to escape safely.

Handmade beauty AMG engines are handcrafted with love! A single person works on building an entire engine and the engine bears the signature of the person who built it. This is one of the factors that make AMG unique and also quite pricey! Not all of us can afford a brand new Mercedes AMG so why not invest in a used one at Japan Motor.
