History of the German car industry

Germany is the fourth biggest automotive manufacturing country in the world. Germany has a reputation for unparalleled engineering quality and the country is home to world-class car brands that are known for quality, innovation and efficiency. The vehicle manufacturing industry spans back to a century and Germany has continued to value engineering precision above anything.

The German automobile industry began in the 1870’s with motorcar pioneers such as Karl Benz and Nicaolaus Otto building the four stroke internal combustion engines. Benz’s innovative idea led to the inspiration to create the modern day motorcar. In the early 1900’s Germany was manufacturing close to a thousand cars annually. A decade and a half later BMW was founded and they started auto production few years after.

The German automobile industry is considered the most competitive as well as among the top in innovation. Annually, the country manufactures close to six million cars. German’s automotive industry plays a pivotal role in European economy and it is the largest market in the European Union.

In 1984 Porsche revolutionized the sport car industry by launching the ever so popular Porsche 365. Ferry Porsche who was a huge sports car fan decided to design a car that would fulfill all the requirements he would like to see in a sports car. The Porsche 365 took inspiration from the Volkswagen Beetle therefore the engine was designed at the back. Porsche decided to stick to this unique style of having the engine on the rear of the car to date.

Germany’s major industries offer employment to people around the world. Good working conditions, and policies attract employees looking for work. Germany’s automotive industry employees close to a million workers.

Not all German manufacturing plants are located inside the country. While Volkswagen has their factories in China, Czech and Brazil, Mercedes has plants located in Romania and Hungary.

Present day
Germany has a huge vehicle export market. Majority of the vehicles that are manufactured are exported to countries around the world. Germany stands at the fourth place in the world after China, US and Japan in terms of the industry size.
