What is the difference between a Crossover and SUV?

Both consumers and automakers use the terms Crossover and SUV interchangeably. This comes as no surprise since both of these vehicles have very close similarities but key differences also exist. In simple terms the difference between the two is that Crossovers are built on car based chassis structure (unibody) whilst SUVs have similarities to a truck. On SUVs the body of the vehicle is built separately from the frame and then placed together later. The unibody of the crossovers are lighter and stiffer than of the SUVs.

SUV stands for Sports Utility Vehicle and Crossovers are referred to as CUV for Crossover Utility Vehicle.

The Crossover is a relatively new vehicle and before it came into place, the SUV was the preferred choice for active and growing families. While the SUV gave the first flavour of how great it is to have extra storage space and improved traction than a sedan, people were already aware of the benefits that come with utility vehicles.

The SUV is a passenger vehicle that is equipped with the ability to pull load similar to a pick up truck. SUVs are equipped with large cabins, high roof space and safety, which attracts buyers. SUV usually have separate luggage sections and is ideal for big families that carry lot of things on a frequent basis.

The term ‘Crossover’ was marketed in the early 90’s with the launch of models such as Toyota RAV4, Honda HRV, Lexus RX and Subaru Crosstrek. Crossovers have similar features to SUVs such as upright seating, spacious interior and capacity to carry lot of baggage. In layman terms crossovers are basically small SUVs but they drive like regular cars. They have features similar to passenger cars such as hatchbacks. Crossovers are easy to maneuver than SUVs and some people prefer the size since it’s easier to park.

While the crossover is a gentler version of a SUV, some people prefer the toughness of a SUV. When you use a SUV it gives you a chance to tow heavy load, travel off-road with ease and traverse through severe conditions.

Which one is for you?
If you plan to buy Japanese used vehicles and is wondering whether the CUV or SUV is for you, then it all depends on your needs and lifestyle.

If you are looking for a comfortable, fuel-efficient vehicle that has easy maneuverability then a crossover would be the best choice for you. A crossover is quite similar to owning a car but with extra space. But if you are looking for vehicle that is tough and high performing then a vehicle with the capability to tow load then there are no two words about it you should invest in a SUV!

If you are planning on investing in a crossover or SUV from a Japanese car auction system then weigh the pros and cons of owning both of these vehicles and figure out which suites best for your lifestyle.
